The Culture War: Jesus vs the spirit of Antichrist

15 March 2017Glorious Way Church

Have political views divided your family and friends? It’s a tragedy to lose longstanding ties over the heat of the moment. You are not alone. Jesus said divisions would increase in the last days before His coming, and we know we are in that season. The root of the divisions we’re seeing across our culture today really come down to one basic issue: who will accept the Lordship of Jesus.

It’s a spiritual question that has very political ramifications. Consider the Apostle Paul’s warning from 2 Thessalonians 2:

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The “lawless one” Paul wrote about is the spirit of antichrist who seeks absolute power and is now grooming the unsuspecting. This spirit is animated today in the form of the secular globalist progressives, or the Left. Promising no rules, judgment or boundaries, the agenda has an appealing veil of inclusiveness. It’s core aim is one-world government, which we know will pave the way for the rise of the person of the antichrist, not yet revealed. Progressives promise this inclusiveness to everyone except God’s people, the Christian and the Jew, whom they have labeled as oppressors. Therefore, Christian speech- especially mention of sin and repentance- should be silenced, since it is considered hateful and intolerant. The nation of Israel, already one of the smallest nations on the face of the earth, should capitulate to Islamic terrorists and give away its land to those who have sworn to kill them. Since the Left values equality over all else, it rewards lifestyle choices that lead to poverty and disease while punishing diligence and hard work– all the while cloaked in false compassion. It sets up government as the ultimate meeter of needs. Government is god.

God’s people, on the other hand, act as a restraint against the spirit of antichrist. Our job is to hold it back until every nation can be evangelized before Jesus’ coming. As Christians wake up to this reality, we see a rise of support in the Church for the agenda of the nationalist conservative movement, or the Right. Here, we look to God to meet our needs, and we seek His blessing on the work of our own hands. Our compassion works through churches and private charities where love, not tax dollars, changes lives. Though members of this movement don’t claim to be perfect, the agenda here is about personal responsibility and freedom of conscience. We stand up for the right to life for those with no voice. It’s about localized government that is in touch with needs of the community. It’s about sovereign national borders, freedom of conscience, and alignment with the nation of Israel so she can keep the land God promises her in the Old Testament. (Israel’s prosperity is another key to Jesus’ coming.) We look to God as our helperĀ and see government in its proper role: a servant of the people; not our master.

By participating in the conservative movement, Christians hope to secure freedom to continue evangelizing without being punished for “hate speech.” We wish to free all people from the ravages of sin by sharing God’s love with them in word and deed. We hope to bless Israel, both individually and as a nation, so that our nation will fall on the side of God’s blessing.

So how can we help our families unite in the face of such rancor and controversy?

1. Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4). We will not be silenced by the antichrist spirit. Even if our friends or family should turn against us, we cannot shrink back from Jesus and His Word. What good is unity if it’s for the wrong cause? Ironically, our stand for righteousness actually brings God’s blessing and protection on our families along with us, even if they don’t see it yet. (For more on the Blessing/Judgment Paradigm, listen here.)
2. Pray for our loved ones who disagree with us. James 5 tells us the earnest, heartfelt prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Prayer will also help lift your own spirit and heal any wounds. When you see these family rifts as part of the larger picture, you’ll be less likely to take them personally.
3. Demonstrate love. Words alone will not save them. Notice the scripture above tells us that those who have pleasure in unrighteousness will fall under a strong delusion, and won’t believe the truth. This is why debating with some people seems so futile. Ask God to show you how to prove that love. Only a demonstration of God’s power through those uncompromisingly devoted to Him can change hearts and minds.
